Eames: The Architect and The Painter

Eames: The Architect and The Painter:
a documentary about the couple by Jason Cohn and Bill Jersey narrated by James Franco, comes out in theaters on November 18th. (typically only in America we'll have to wait at least a year to hit the other side of the Atlantic.)

Arguably the most influential couple of architectural history. This film offers a rare insight into the duo's relationship.

Conchiglia Sideboard by Studiocharlie

The Conchiglia (shell) sideboard by Studiocharlie for Lema is inspired by the geometric form of a spiral or the “golden ratio.”

From the designers:

What we see when we observe a spiral is a portion of it. As it develops it becomes too large to be perceived by the human eye, and in its origin it is too small for us to see the minute details. The sideboard Conchiglia is built on a portion of a spiral. As the geometric form develops, the size of the doors increases, and where the details become invisible at the origin of the spiral there is a void, a concentrated space. The sideboard’s resolute design — its square shape and compact mass — give strength to its presence.

Conchiglia comes in different colors and the doors have either a matte or shiny finish.

Silent Alarm Clock

Hate that nagging beeping sound that screams out from your alarm clock, especially on Monday morning? So did designer Johan Brengesjo. He decided to develop an alarm clock that wakes you up without sound. Instead, you wear a wireless rubber ring with an integrated vibration device that generates a tactile alarm. To snooze, simply shake your hand. However, there’s a catch — each time you shake your hand to snooze, more movement is required to stop the vibration, so eventually you are awake enough to get up.

D\ZEN Furniture by CTRLZAK

The inspiration behind this project was when Zakopoulos and Meneghini discovered something peculiar on a mountain near a Buddhist temple: tiny sticks placed underneath massive boulders, appearing to support them but too small to bear the stone’s weight. The idea behind the furniture is that the stick is man’s little touch, which supports nature but reminds us that everything is temporary. D\ZEN furniture pieces are archetypal forms that sustain objects and people, imperfect forms in perfect balance.

IX Mirrors by Ron Gilad

The collaboration with Dilmos Gallery led Gilad to explore the artistic and cultural past of Italy. In his mirrors, he incorporates antique Venetian fabrics, Byzantine mosaics made in Ravenna, hand sculpted figures modeled after classic Roman sculptures, while maintaining his own artistic authenticity. For him, the act of quoting the past has two roles, giving respect to it and serving his urge to playfully redefine it.

Unique Bedroom Design by Steve Kuhl Featuring a Pirate Ship

Unique Bedroom Design by Steve Kuhl Featuring a Pirate Ship: "

Designed by Steve Kuhl, this amazing pirate inspired bedroom accomplishes a dream for pirate enthusiasts of all ages. Ingeniously constructed, the unique bedroom can be accessed by letting go of all fears and becoming a child again: at a superior floor, a hole in the wall takes you sliding down a slide to a comfortable pillow located in the actual bedroom. Once you get up, the eyes immediately rise to meet a wonderful, fairy tale structure: a large pirate ship high on the ceiling. A wooden rope bridge is used to access the ship, where the crow’s nest reigns, alongside a second bed, for guests. The crow’s nest was made using a ten inch hand-hewn timber for extra strength and a rope connects it to the dressing below. The structure of the ship was carefully created: “We used 2×12 ribs to construct the hull of the ship, covering them with layers of 1/2 inch plywood to act as the planking. Our genius faux finisher developed a bomb-proof blend of plaster and epoxy with integrated colouring to simulate an old ship’s hull.” There is another way to access the bedroom: through a door that also hides the magic kingdom of the sea. A jail cell with a custom steel door meets whoever enters the room. It also serves as the base of the rope bridge. This astonishing interior design will help the child grow up in a creative environment, don’t you think?

QuaDror

QuaDror: "

Most of the products I post on this site are luxury items, but design isn’t just pretty things to buy; design can change the world. Here’s an example of that:

Dror Benshetrit has created a new building system called QuaDror that might change the way you see building materials.

Unveiled at the Design Indaba conference last week in South Africa, QuaDror is a space truss geometry that has structural integrity and flexible design capabilities. A four-year design process of experimentation and investigation, Dror designed, created, researched, and finally came up with a suitable geometry that is capable of five main applications: dividing, dwelling, trestle, fenestration and artistic installation.

Last week I was creatively constipated. Sorry to be crass but that’s exactly how it can feel, no? When this happens I embark on a now-steady routine to get things moving again, and usually in this order: suddenly feel grouchy upon blockage setting in, sulk, nap, evaluate my future as a working creative, panic, consult my heroes, reconnect to the collective flow, ready to go.
